In what seems like a tit-for-tat response to the 'SYL' song by Gee hafid, famous Punjabi singer and MLA of the ruling party, Bajeet Sidhu, has released his version of the same song. Titled 'Moose Wala SYL', this is no ordinary cover song from Sidhu Moose Wala. The video features many top Punjabi celebs, including actor Upasana Gaonkar, Ravi Dubey, V Rego, and many others lip-syncing this fantastic new single. In a press release by the artist after releasing the track on social media today (June 6), he said: "I have always believed that there's nothing wrong in speaking your mind. Everyone should raise their voice for things they believe in. So I decided to come up with my version of the SYL song which has now become a trend among Punjabi singers." Once again, it's clear that Punjabi singers are not afraid to take a stand and state their opinion on controversial issues such as the SYL issue if it goes against their personal beliefs. Watch here:
3 months to SYL?
The Supreme Court has listed this case for hearing on June 19, 2018. The hearing is expected to be completed within 3 months, after which we should be able to see some clarity on what happens next with the dispute. This SYL case is a dispute between the states of Punjab and Haryana on sharing water from the Ravi Beas system. The Supreme Court of India has been hearing this case since 2007. The case was listed for the final hearing on March 16, 2018. However, on March 15, 2018, the state of Punjab moved an Application for Urgent Hearing by a three-judge bench. The court listed the case for hearing on June 19, 2018. The last hearing was on May 10, 2018.
Bottom line: Still no clarity on what will happen next
What will happen next with the dispute? This is what we have been trying to tell you from the beginning. People from both states have been saying unnecessary things and trying to instigate the people of their states against each other. The only hope we can come to terms with is hearing what the Supreme Court has to say. The hearing is expected to be completed within 3 months, after which we should be able to see some clarity on what happens next with the dispute.
Events leading up to the hearing
What events happened leading up to the hearing? This hearing is the result of a petition filed by Haryana against the decision of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. In 2016, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had ordered a new survey of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal and had concluded that Punjab did not have the right to use the water, which was the Centre's intervention. However, the Punjab government approached the Supreme Court against the order of the High Court. On October 16, 2017, the Supreme Court directed the Centre to constitute a panel to look into the SYL issue and give its report.
What happens after the hearing?
